Rebuilding the Import Address Table Using Hooked DLL Calls February 24, 2009
Posted by reversengineering in E-BOOK.1 comment so far
For a Reverse Engineer, rebuilding a large Import Address Table (IAT) can be a very time-consuming and tedious process. When the IAT has been sufficiently hashed or munged and current IAT rebuilders fail to resolve any of the calls, there is little other choice than to rebuild it by hand. Depending on the size, it can take days or even weeks. Also, doing anything by hand is prone to mistakes. QuietRIATT is an IDA Pro plug-in which automates the process of rebuilding the IAT when it can’t be done by current IAT tools. Not only can it greatly reduce the amount of time spent rebuilding by hand, it also removes the element of human error.

An individual reading this should have a solid understanding of ASM, how computers handle memory, the Win32 Debugging API, and at least some knowledge of Windows internals. This code most likely will not work on any *nix platform due to the fundamental differences of the Operating Systems. Any other knowledge in the field of reverse engineering is also a plus. One great thing about learning and implementing anti-debugging is that you also develop your reversing skills, which is a great plus to anyone interested in the field. Along with the other mentioned subjects, an interested reader should also be familiar with the tools used for binary application reversing such as OllyDBG, WinDBG, SoftICE, IDA Pro, and others.

The Developer’s Guide to Debugging
244 pages | Springer; 1 edition (August 2008) | ISBN-10: 1402055390 | PDF | 1.7 Mb
That’s true, unfortunately. Even the good old “hello, world” program, known to virtually every C and C++ programmer in the world, can be considered to be buggy. Developing software means having to deal with defects; old ones, new ones, ones you created yourself, and those that others brought to life. Software developers debug programs for a living.
Hence, good debugging skills are a must-have. That said, it is regrettable that debugging is hardly taught in engineering schools. That’s how the idea for this book was born.
The Developer’s Guide to Debugging is a book for both professional software developers seeking to broaden their skills and students that want to learn the tricks of the trade from the ground up. With small examples and exercises it is well suited to accompany a CS course or lecture. At the same time it can be used as a reference guide to address problems as the need arises.
This book goes beyond the level of simple source code debugging scenarios. In addition, it covers the most frequent real-world problems from the areas of program linking, memory access, parallel processing and performance analysis. The picture is completed by chapters covering static checkers and techniques to write code that leans well towards debugging.
While the focus lies on C and C++, the workhorses of the software industry, one can apply many techniques described in The Developer’s Guide to Debugging to programs written in other languages.

How hackers, viruses, and worms attack computers from the Internet and exploit security holes in software is explained in this outline of antivirus software, patches, and firewalls that try in vain to withstand the storm of attacks. Some software’s effectiveness exists only in the imaginations of its developers because they prove unable to prevent the propagation of worms, but this guide examines where security holes come from, how to discover them, how to protect systems (both Windows and Unix), and how to do away with security holes altogether. Unpublished advanced exploits and techniques in both C and Assembly languages are included.

Publisher: Springer
Date : 2007
Pages : 242
Format : PDF
OCR : Y
Quality :
Language :
ISBN : 184628855X
Product Description
Reverse engineering is the process of discovering the technological principles of an object or component through analysis of its structure and function. Such analysis can then be used to redesign the object very quickly using computer-aided design in concert with rapid-manufacturing processes to produce small numbers of components adapted to the needs of a particular customer. This way of working has huge benefits of speed and flexibility over traditional mass-production-based design and manufacturing processes.
This edited collection of essays from world-leading academic and industrial authors yields insight into all aspects of reverse engineering:
The methods of reverse engineering analysis are covered, with special emphasis on the investigation of surface and internal structures.
Frequently-used hardware and software are assessed and advice given on the most suitable choice of system.
Rapid prototyping is introduced and its relationship with successful reverse engineering is discussed.
Importantly, legal matters surrounding reverse engineering are addressed as are other barriers to the adoption of these techniques.
Applications of reverse engineering in three significant areas: automotive, aerospace, and medical engineering are reported in depth.
Reverse Engineering is a “must have” title for anyone working with advanced modern manufacturing technologies, either with a view to researching and improving them further or to making their company leaner and more agile in a competitive manufacturing marketplace.

How does software break? How do attackers make software break on purpose? Why are firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and antivirus software not keeping out the bad guys? What tools can be used to break software? This book provides the answers. Exploiting Software is loaded with examples of real attacks, attack patterns, tools, and techniques used by bad guys to break software. If you want to protect your software from attack, you must first learn how real attacks are really carried out. This must-have book may shock you-and it will certainly educate you. Getting beyond the script kiddie treatment found in many hacking books, you will learn about
* Why software exploit will continue to be a serious problem.
* When network security mechanisms do not work
* Attack patterns
* Reverse engineering
* Classic attacks against server software
* Surprising attacks against client software
* Techniques for crafting malicious input
* The technical details of buffer overflows
* Rootkits
Exploiting Software is filled with the tools, concepts, and knowledge necessary to break
software.

Computing hardware would have no value without software; software tells hardware what to do. Software therefore must have special authority within computing systems. All computer security problems stem from that fact, and Exploiting Software: How to Break Code shows you how to design your software so it’s as resistant as possible to attack. Sure, everything’s phrased in offensive terms (as instructions for the attacker, that is), but this book has at least as much value in showing designers what sorts of attacks their software will face (the book could serve as a checklist for part of a pre-release testing regimen). Plus, the clever reverse-engineering strategies that Greg Hoglund and Gary McGraw teach will be useful in many legitimate software projects. Consider this a recipe book for mayhem, or a compendium of lessons learned by others. It depends on your situation.
PHP programmers will take issue with the authors’ blanket assessment of their language (”PHP is a study in bad security”), much of which seems based on older versions of the language that had some risky default behaviors–but those programmers will also double-check their servers’ register_globals settings. Users of insufficiently patched Microsoft and Oracle products will worry about the detailed attack instructions this book contains. Responsible programmers and administrators will appreciate what amounts to documentation of attackers’ rootkits for various operating systems, and will raise their eyebrows at the techniques for writing malicious code to unused EEPROM chips in target systems. –David Wall
Topics covered: How to make software fail, either by doing something it wasn’t designed to do, or by denying its use to its rightful users. Techniques–including reverse engineering, buffer overflow, and particularly provision of unexpected input–are covered along with the tools needed to carry them out. A section on hardware viruses is detailed and frightening.

The Art of Intrusion: The Real Stories Behind the Exploits of Hackers, Intruders & Deceivers August 31, 2008
Posted by reversengineering in E-BOOK.add a comment
Wiley; 1 edition 2005
Kevin Mitnick
261
It would be difficult to find an author with more credibility than Mitnick to write about the art of hacking. In 1995, he was arrested for illegal computer snooping, convicted and held without bail for two years before being released in 2002. He clearly inspires unusual fear in the authorities and unusual dedication in the legions of computer security dabblers, legal and otherwise. Renowned for his use of “social engineering,” the art of tricking people into revealing secure information such as passwords, Mitnick (The Art of Deception) introduces readers to a fascinating array of pseudonymous hackers. One group of friends bilks Las Vegas casinos out of more than a million dollars by mastering the patterns inherent in slot machines; another fellow, less fortunate, gets mixed up with a presumed al-Qaeda–style terrorist; and a prison convict leverages his computer skills to communicate with the outside world, unbeknownst to his keepers. Mitnick’s handling of these engrossing tales is exemplary, for which credit presumably goes to his coauthor, writing pro Simon. Given the complexity (some would say obscurity) of the material, the authors avoid the pitfall of drowning readers in minutiae. Uniformly readable, the stories—some are quite exciting—will impart familiar lessons to security pros while introducing lay readers to an enthralling field of inquiry.
